As the end of the semester nears its end, students of the University of the Philippines, Los Banos, comes face to face with their most difficult challenges as students. Like Charles Darwin’s Survival of the fittest, college students are tested with not only their academic knowledge but also their life skills and abilities to cope with tons of workload and stress. Students at an alarming rate are being sent to the university infirmary for sicknesses due to sleep deprivation and palpitations from excess caffeine consumption. With all the papers students have to do and exams they have to study for, the 24 hours we were given in a day is definitely not enough.
TOP 10 THINGS I HAVE LEARNED FROM TAKING DEVC 30, TWICE!
AND WHY I DON’T REGRET IT.
DEVCOM 30 IS A FUN SUBJECT. Trust me. Anyone who’s anyone, who has taken the subject, would tell you how fun, interactive and engaging the subject is. The broadcasting concepts, learning about the history and inventions that had lead to it and actually being able to manipulate the console and broadcast is a one kind exposure, development communication students are privileged to have experienced. Lucky enough for me, (Don’t ask why) I was blessed enough to actually take the subject twice, study for the same concepts twice and broadcast double times the fun and actually appreciate and absorb every lesson, detail that I have encountered. Not only that, I was also blessed to have taken the subject twice from the same professor, Sir Mark Chico.
I have always thought that I wouldn’t be able to have enough confidence to be featured on TV or any broadcast platform, but here I am having broadcasted 4 times and survived it.
PAK! PAK! GANERN?
Without any further, here are my Top 10 learnings from Devcom 30, Fundamentals of Community Broadcasting.
Whenever I feel a little lonely, I look up and think about all these silly things that would obviously never happen. I would think about money bearing plants and if ever the trees surrounding me could reach the moon. I would think about aliens and how weird it is that they still haven’t made contact with us (if ever they really exist). I think about the woman in front of me who was rushing and who seemed to be feeling bad about something. What was she thinking about? Why was she rushing? I don’t think I’ll ever know.
I walk more and I see all these people who have their own separate lives, not caring about anyone who isn’t a priority, not caring about the people who was passing them by, not caring about me. Me, who was busy thinking about what other people are thinking about. Is that creepy? Looking at people and thinking about what they’re thinking about? I laugh because it’s funny how people are always thinking about themselves and what they need. I laugh more because I remembered I was one of them. I wasn’t anything special.
And then I get a text from a friend about something that was interesting and everything that I was busy thinking about the past few minutes vanished like the sun on a sunset. Never to be known by others, never to matter.
What about you? What do you do when you feel a little blue? Are you just like me? I hope so.
There would be a lot of times when one would not be able to give time for thinking. People in today’s generation would usually just give an inquiry, five to ten minutes of their time and would already shift to the next task at hand. Most of the new gadgets produced nowadays would always require our maximum attention. Text messaging and social media websites alone already take us hours to use. One would also never reach the 2048 tile without focusing on every detail and plotting every move. And Candy Crush? Don’t get me started on Candy Crush.
So isn’t it amazing when you actually get the time to think about life? Or just remember all the good or bad things that happened that week? Don’t you find it amusing when you suddenly find time to think about how you feel and what you want? I certainly do.
Whenever I would ride the bus to reach my second home, The University of the Philippines, Los Banos, I would always pick the window seat usually at the end of the bus where there was no one to bother me. I would look out and view the streets and all the people that the bus would pass by and when we reach the mountain areas, I would listen to my favorite hits and pretend that I am in a music video. The time it takes me to get to my destination usually exceeds three hours and by the time I get to my stop, I would realize that there were a lot of things that I was able to think about during the trip.
I thought about life in general. I thought about the people in my life and how they were affecting me. I thought about love, and how it shattered me into pieces. More and more things would flashback in my head and I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking. I usually see the events that unfolded the week before or the feelings that strongly affected my decisions over the past couple days. But mostly I thought about redemption.
Going down the bus would always be fulfilling. I may not have done anything productive for academics or work but I was one step closer to knowing who I really am. And that’s all because I was able to think. You may feel it’s ridiculous but who knows? You might just be able to answer those questions about yourself that you’ve always avoided. Maybe all you needed to do was give time for thinking?
Just think my friend, and give it a chance. Think about what you would eat next, where you would go after twelve years or who you would be?
The only person who knows the answers to all these questions would be yourself. So why don’t you think about it?

After weeks and weeks of school work, stress and intense teleserye drama in our lives, some of us would feel tired and completely drained out. There will come a time in our lives when we’d totally just want to lose control and have fun. It’s either we go bar hopping and drink until our stomach’s full of alcohol, or go traveling to different places we’ve never been to. Some would have food trips, where they would visit several local food chains to binge or try different cuisine. There are other people though who prefer to just stay at home, read a book, watch an award-winning film or marathon feel-good television series like F.R.I.E.N.D.S. or HIMYM.
Me and my barkada, (bestfriends in Filipino) “The Honeybees”, as what we call ourselves, would try different things to satisfy our need for fun and adventure. If you’re an Instagram follower of mine and read the caption, you will see that whenever possible, us Honeybees would usually go on adventures around the different parts of Quezon City and beyond if we have the budget. There will be times when we go food tripping at different restaurants and go mall hopping. Most of the time we drink and take a lot, and I mean a lot, of pictures. This post that you are currently reading is about one of my favorite activities we’ve done during the summer. We had a photo shoot with actual models, make-up and lighting. And wow, what a fun photo shoot it was. Continue reading Honeybees Photoshoot Extravaganza→

You wake up one day and you realize that you’ve fallen in love. He was dashing, like the ones on television; the captain of the basketball team, Mr. Face of the night at your junior year’s prom. Every girl would swoon and sigh whenever he walks down the hallway and above all else, he could sing.
It was as if he was taken straight out of those chick flicks that you and your best friends would love to watch on a rainy Monday with all the chips and ice cream and accompanied by the latest album of one of your favorite boy bands. You’ve seen all of his photos at least thrice and know every last girl who has left a comment on each one. You would wait for every single holiday just so you could send him a greeting. Even the slightest sound of his name would make your head tingle and your mind burn with passion. A little push was all you needed to finally say hello (Oh, and a lot of encouraging from your BFFs). One thing led to another, and suddenly you were hanging out. You didn’t have to wait for a holiday anymore to send him a message and now you could view his photos without having to use your little brother’s account. He would say hello every time he passes by you and you would hear all the other girls hiss and growl at you like jungle animals ready to attack. Continue reading Heartbreaks and Endless Possibilities→
